I started to learn lojban yesterday and i was wondering how much time will it take me to learn all the important grammer and a large vocabulry so i can actually speak lojban

thanks.

I would say it would take you around a week to learn the basic grammar and read simple sentences and about 3 weeks to have a very simple conversation with someone. It will take longer if you slack off on it or you have a very busy schedule, however.

That's a bit far back in my history, but I can recommend a few things you could focus on:

  • Complete the Wave Lessons http://jbotcan.org/wave_lesson/ ; (ignore Lojban for Beginners, as while it's not exactly wrong, it can be confusing and is poorly thought out IMO.)
  • Ask questions in IRC about how to say particular things (or what a particular Lojban expression means), and try expressing things. We're pretty friendly.
  • Understanding when LE and LA are needed, and what they do (eg. "le mi" is invalid because mi is a sumti, not a selbri, and therefore has no x1 place to convert.)
  • Understanding terminators. In particular,

understanding LE..KU and NU..KEI clauses.

  • Understand how selbri compound into tanru. this will help you to not say silly things like {le mi gerku barda} -- "my dog-ish type-of big thing" (a 'ku' is missing after gerku)

Specifically WRT vocabulary

  • Pay attention in IRC and ask stuff.
  • Do some drills (I found speaking the words loudly and clearly helps, and making sure you talk about the meaning of each place of the gismu.) Smart.FM (website) and Anki (software) are good for this.
  • Use some kind of search system that lets you quickly find likely gismu for expressing your meaning. some of these are (http://github.com/dag/makfa-cli , http://vlasisku.lojban.org/ , and my own http://gitorious.org/jbotci). This is a bit more along the lines of 'understanding the conventions of how lojban works'. Many related gismu have similar place structure, so once you understand how that works it's easier to remember them.

Hope that helps :)

I've completed Lojban for Beginners, do you think the Wave Lessons are of any good to me now?

I think that L4B cover less than the wave lessons, since those are under development. What I encourage is to ask for some help in the IRC channel, because there are some things that changed (mainly "xorlo").
The other suggestion is to read texts and learn a nice amount of vocabulary, since you already know the grammar.
