CLL says that a comma is used in "kore,a" because "ea" is not a valid diphthong in Lojban. If "ea" is not recognized as a diphthong but separate vowels/syllables, why would you insert a comma to separate them?

Commas are never required. They only serve as reminders or suggestions for syllable breaks, for people who want them. Personally, I never use them.
